Scientists have named a newly discovered genus of beetles Luffy due to the insects’ stretched, rubber-like appearance. The researchers selected the name because the beetles’ physical features closely resemble the main character from the manga and anime series One Piece.

This resemblance extends to the insects’ exceptionally long mandibles, antennae, and maxillary palps. The unusual proportions reminded the scientists of the fictional character’s ability to freely extend his limbs.

A Rubber-Like Appearance

So far, researchers have identified two species: Luffy schillhammeri and Luffy nika. The first species was discovered in broadleaf forests in Yunnan Province, China. Its name honors Dr. Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna for his contributions to rove beetle research.

The second species, Luffy nika, was found in Louang Namtha in northern Laos. The name refers to the character’s “Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika” (Gear 5), a legendary Devil Fruit awakening. The beetle features prominent white bands of hair on its elytra and body, resembling the white, smoke-covered form Luffy takes during this transformation.

Publication of the taxonomic descriptions occurred in the open-access, peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys.

Evolutionary Significance

The discovery holds scientific weight beyond the name. PhD student Fang-Shuo Hu and Alexey Solodovnikov of the Natural History Museum of Denmark conducted a broad review of every known genus in the Ocypus group. Their analysis examined groups whose positions in the beetle family tree have remained uncertain, such as Acupronotes, Apostenolinus, and Staphylinus. By studying numerous specimens and comparing small anatomical differences, the team reassessed how these groups are related.

They identified shared derived characteristics that define the “Eucibdelus lineage,” such as the left mandible possessing dorsal ridge teeth and a completely sclerotized labrum. The Luffy genus has the dorsal ridge teeth found in this lineage, but its labrum is not completely sclerotized. It also possesses distinctive features not seen in other groups. Based on this combination of traits, the researchers concluded that Luffy is probably the sister group of the entire Eucibdelus lineage.

This genus exhibits a unique combination of characters intermediate between the Eucibdelus lineage and other members of the Ocypus-group. The researchers note that our understanding of this insect lineage is continuously evolving with new discoveries. By occupying this unusual position, the genus helps fill an important gap in the existing classification system and offers a fresh perspective on the evolutionary history of the subtribe Staphlinina.

The researchers hope the story of Luffy will help bring science closer to the public. They aim to increase awareness of the importance of biological taxonomy and encourage more young people to explore biodiversity and classification research with the same adventurous spirit associated with the character.
