Congo politician killed over Ebola support

Congo politician killed over Ebola support - ebola support
Marie-Celestin Karondwa was attacked on Sunday in Butembo.

Marie-Celestin Karondwa, a politician from the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), has succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent assault. The UDPS asserts that the attack was likely retaliation for his vocal advocacy of measures to combat the Ebola outbreak.

Serving as the UDPS spokesperson in Butembo, an eastern city, Karondwa was attacked on Sunday, leading to his eventual death. His home was also vandalized and set on fire, with his belongings looted.

Party Condemns Attack, Demands Justice

The UDPS characterized Karondwa as a blameless target, highlighting his public stance that Ebola is a genuine and significant threat to public health. While the exact reason for the attack remains unclear, the party suspects it was linked to his unwavering support for Ebola response efforts. They have called for a thorough investigation and urged that the perpetrators be brought to justice.

Karondwa’s tragic death occurs amidst escalating challenges in controlling Ebola in eastern DR Congo. Insecurity, violence, and community resistance have hindered the work of health teams, exacerbating the crisis. Attacks on medical facilities have limited access to affected areas, disrupted monitoring efforts, and deterred individuals from seeking treatment.

Between the declaration of a public health emergency on May 17 and mid-August, the World Health Organization documented 12 attacks on healthcare facilities. As of September 27, the National Institute of Public Health reported 8,116 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,924 deaths in DR Congo. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists, although experimental options are being explored.

The murder of Marie-Celestin Karondwa raises concerns about a potential surge in violence against individuals supporting Ebola prevention initiatives. As conditions in eastern DR Congo worsen, organizations like the World Health Organization are likely to face mounting obstacles in their efforts to contain the outbreak.

In response, the UDPS is advocating for enhanced protection of its members and allies engaged in Ebola response activities. They are also urging the government to take more decisive action to prevent further attacks on health workers and facilities. The World Health Organization and other international bodies are collaborating with the DR Congo government to support outbreak control measures.
